Recently, we discovered what it feels like to be in the 'eye of the storm.' Storm Frank, or is it Imogen, or Gertrude? Whoever it is, they're playing a blinder – New Year's Day was a wipeout. It was a week for goulashes, wellingtons, and a flotation device. Two reasons to hibernate and avoid ever leaving my house; the storm and of course, the equally frenzied sales. People are red-faced, rude and annoyingly smug – “Yes, I realise you now own Topshop’s entire series of sequin dresses, but stripping naked in the dressing room queue is just a little hysterical, no?”
And so, I give you a burst of neon orange and an embellished cap to brighten up what has been a dark, dreary start to the year – the perfect outfit to brace the unpredictable weather. Or is it? Fashion can be functional or frivolous. You either spend your money on the bulky raincoat that makes perfect sense on a rainy day or the embellished cap from H & M you may never wear. Ireland is a country used to rain. It rains on average 150 days a year in the east coast. We welcome it. After all, a kiss in the rain is the ultimate romantic moment.
Irish actress and former model, Anjelica Huston braced the Irish rain in 1969 for a Vogue shoot alongside fashion greats; photographer Richard Avedon, fashion editors Babs Simpson and Polly Mellon and hairdresser Ara Gallan. Babs Simpson recalls the photo-shoot, “Dick and I chose the locations together, and I don’t remember any kind of conflict. Ireland was great fun. We had a caravan, and the people we worked with were absolutely adorable…Sunset was very late, because of the climate, It’s lovely of Anjelica isn’t it? And so elegant – typical Avedon.” Anjelica cycles away from Avedon’s camera wearing a cropped riding raincoat and matching straight-leg pants in khaki on the cover of the magazine – establishing a rainy wardrobe the world over. Perhaps this should have been my inspiration on a day like today. Not an embellished cap.
